Concho has a Schoolwide Title 1 program. This enables us to have several programs available to all of our students. These include C.L.I.P. reading, Practice Reading Program, and Accelerated Reading. The C.L.I.P. program is individualized, focusing on Early Primary students. Our Practice Reading Program is small group, designed for 2nd through 8th graders. Accelerated Reading is computer based program that encourages individual reading among students. Our goal is to promote a love of reading, thereby increasing student success in all areas.

Our Practice Reading Program provides extra reading assistance to students in addition to the regular classroom program. Judy Pannell meets with the students selected for this program for 30 minute periods 4 or 5 times a week. The focus is on reading strategies, word recognition, phonics, vocabulary, or comprehension. The focus is adjusted to the child's needs. Our goal is grade level reading.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized program. Children read books and then take computer quizzes. Points are earned for each passed quiz. The program generates reports that tell teachers and parents how the student is doing. There is a bulletin board in the hall that explains various components of AR.

Two important components of the AR program are the points and the certificates.

The points accumulate as children pass quizzes. Passing a quiz can earn from 0.5 to 10 or more points. As books get more difficult, the point value increases. We have prize boxes for 10, 25, 50 and 75 points. At 100 points the student earns a pizza party with a friend. We have gift certificates for each 50 points beyond 100. The points are erased at the end of the year.

The certificate portion of the program uses points in addition to book levels. The students earn certificates as they read a required number of books at a certain level. These certificates are continuous through the years. Once a certificate is received, the student moves on to the next certificate level.
